VIŠEGRAD

On the hilly slopes that rise to mountains over 1000 meters high, The Višegrad valley is a rare extension along the Drina River. Drina's narrow and deep canyon spreads into the valley and right there is a 500-year-old stone bridge with 11 wide arches, better known to all as the "Bridge on the Drina".

One of the great Ottoman military leaders, Mehmed - pasha Sokolović, originally from Bosnia, had this magnificent bridge built on the Drina in 1506. The bridge represents a construction masterpiece, and today it's inscribed in the UNESCO world cultural heritage list. This bridge is certainly an unavoidable attraction for anyone who wants to learn a thing or two about the area's history. This small eastern Bosnian town rose to international fame after Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andric's novel "The Bridge on the Drina" was published.

Ivo Andrić talks about this very bridge and tells the story of the legend of "The tower of Prince Marko", which is also located in Višegrad.

For all Andrić fans, and anyone wanting to get acquainted with a part of Bosnian history and culture, a trip to Višegrad is the perfect way to spend your weekend.

The "čaršija" or bazaar of Višegrad begins at the bridge, which is located at the confluence of the rivers Rzav and Drina. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, and craft shops to be found here.

Andrićgrad, located on a peninsula between these two rivers, is a tourist, cultural, and educational complex inspired by Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić's works and characters.

In this interesting small town, you have the option to stay in a hotel or hostel, enjoy numerous restaurants, cafes and pastry shops. While there, you can also visit the Renaissance Theatre and choose between 3 cinemas, galleries, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Ivo Andrić Institute.

In Višegrad, filling a weekend with activities won't be a problem. If you have one day reserved for sightseeing and admiring historical sites, make sure to reserve another one for boat rides and fishing on the Drina. Take some time to admire the beauty of the canyons and valleys surrounding you.
